What does it take to be a substitute teacher or substitute paraprofessional (aide)?

The Olympia District is currently in need of substitutes- aides, teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria staff, custodians.  We would love for you to come work for us!  Below are the guidelines for being a substitute in different capacities. 

Short Term Substitutes 

  • Require only 60 hours of college credit.  
  • Must be fingerprinted through the Regional Office of Education and must provide appropriate documentation (physical, transcript, etc.) 
  • Participate in Substitute Teacher Training through ROE (1/2 day training). 
  • Once the ROE mails candidates their short term sub letter, candidates can apply with interested districts.  The Olympia application can be accessed online at https://www.olympia.org/o/district/page/employment--94
  • Short term substitutes cannot teach more than 5 consecutive days in the same classroom. 
  • The Olympia substitute teacher pay rate is $100.00 per day.  

Substitute Teachers

  • Must have bachelor's degree or higher. 
  • Must be fingerprinted through the ROE and must provide appropriate documentation (physicals, transcripts, etc.)
  • Once the above steps are completed, the ROE will mail the candidate a letter confirming their eligibility to sub. 
  • Teachers can then apply with the district.  The Olympia application can be accessed online at https://www.olympia.org/o/district/page/employment--94
  • The Olympia substitute teacher pay rate is $100.00 per day.

Paraprofessional (or Substitute Paraprofessional)

  • Must have 60 hours of college credit 
  • Must obtain a paraprofessional license from the ROE

  • The pay rate for substitute paraprofessionals is $12.50 an hour.
