Captain Reid Nannen, Olympia Grad

Services for Marine Major Reid "Eeyore" Nannen, a 2000 Olympia graduate, who died March 1, 2014 in a "Top Gun"training exercise at Fallon, Nevada were held Saturday, March 22.. Captain Nannen was ten days away from a promotion to Major Nannen and graduating from Top Gun School in Fallon, Nevada. Visitation was held from 4 -7 p.m. Friday, March 21, at Olympia High School, Stanford, IL. The funeral was held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Eastview Christian Church, Normal, IL, with burial following at Camp Butler in Springfield.

While at Olympia, Reid was a two-year captain of the swim team, section leader for the drum line, member of Elite Eight Baseball Teams in 1999 and 2000 and was an Illinois State Scholar. After graduating from Olympia High School, Reid went on to the University of Illinois. While in school, he was a member of the NROTC battalion and participated in the Marching Illini Drum Line NROTC Drill Team. Reid was commissioned a second lieutenant in May, 2004, and attended The Basic School with Delta Company class 4-04. After TBS, Reid attended Naval Aviation Training with MATSG-21 at NAS Pensacola, NAS Whiting Field and NAS Meridian. Reid received several awards and decorations in his short career.

Reid is survived by his wife, Sarah, and four children: Peter, 5, Betsy, 3 1/2, Curtis, 2, and Isla, age 2 months. Captain Nannen was the son of Dale and Mary Ann Nannen from Hopedale, Illinois, and he had two sisters, Bethany and Briana.
