Video: bit.ly/OlyCBV7 As humans, we thrive on social connections and group associations. But this tendency can also lead us to be suspicious of people outside our group. This fear -- xenophobia -- can be overcome by more exposure to people who are different from us. However, the internet can often make this more difficult. Help your kids recognize this challenge and find strategies for navigating content online.

Countering Hate Speech
Video: bit.ly/OlyCBV2 As kids grow, they'll naturally start to communicate more online, but some of what they see could make them feel hurt, sad, angry, or even fearful. Help your students build empathy for others and learn strategies to use when confronted with cyberbullying.

Video: bit.ly/OlyCBV1 Let's face it: Some online spaces can be full of negative, rude, or downright mean behavior. But what counts as cyberbullying? Help your kids learn what is - and what isn't - cyberbullying, and give them the tools they'll need to combat the problem.

Make sure kids understand what cyberbullying is: repeated and unwanted mean or hurtful words or behavior that occur online (through texts, social media posts, online chat, etc.).

Olympia High School to perform the play “Sherlock Holmes” Olympia High School presents the drama Sherlock Holmes, an adaptation of the original script first performed in 1899. Our shows on October 11 and October 12 will be performed at 7:00 PM; there will be a matinee performance on October 13 at 2:00 PM. All performances will be on stage in the Olympia High School auditorium. A neatly-woven conglomeration of several of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s short stories, this plot centers around Alice Faulkner (Natalie Collins), a young woman who holds certain documents which could, if made public, lead to an international scandal and perhaps even world war! Under the watchful eye of James and Madge Larrabee (Gage Hunt-Schroers and Mabry Lynn), poor Alice is trapped and helpless to escape their clutches. When safecracker Sid Prince (Felix Brown) brings her captors to consult the diabolical Professor Moriarty (Leo Durheim), it seems that Sherlock Holmes (Ainsley Mahoney) will have to use all of his wits to save the day. Doctor Watson (Grayson Rummel) leads the rest of a large cast who are either working for or working against Holmes as we wander from the streets to London to fine drawing rooms to Moriarty’s hidden lair. This production is directed by Wendy Wade, with tech design by Megan Whitecotton and costuming by Heather Schwarting. For ticket information, contact Wendy Wade at (309) 379-5941, ext. 3301.
